Let us remind you that the presidential elections in Romania had to be repeated after the Constitutional Court decision, which annulled the results of the November vote of 2024. The ruling followed a series of reports and analyses that pointed to serious shortcomings in the electoral process. In particular, allegations were raised concerning deficiency of transparency, irregularities in the counting of votes and insufficient control of candidates' campaigns.
Special controversy raised suspicions of external interference in the election campaign—including Russian influences that were allegedly to support candidate Călin Georgescu.
The authorities and the institutions liable for holding the elections considered that the scale of the problems was so serious that it could actually distort the result of the vote. As a result, in order to reconstruct public assurance in the democratic process, a decision was made to organise a fresh vote.
