"The first place to commemorate the atrocities committed under German business in Poland during planet War II takes shape" – we read on Monday (16.06.2025) on the portal of the German press editorial network RND.
Informing about the temporary monument of Polish war victims planned to be unveiled present in the centre of Berlin, writer Jan Sterneberg writes that the large boulder (which will service as a preliminary monument – ed.) is simply a "holder of space" for the right monument and the Polish-German House, which are to be built in the following years.
As we read, today's ceremony is very crucial due to the current political situation in Poland. "During the election campaign, recently elected Polish president Karol Nawrocki spoke about fresh demands for reparations from Germany".
"A sign against oblivion"
RND quotes German minister liable for Wolfram Weimer's culture, who told the newspapers of this network: "Thanks to the temporary memorial site we make the first visible sign of memory in the centre of our capital – a sign against oblivion, against displacement, against silence of victims of planet War II and German tyranny in Poland. Through a sign of memory we want to remind about the suffering of Poles who came from German soil".
Weimer added in an interview with RND that the temporary stone is "a roadway that should remind us of the intent of our journey: the central memorial place in the name of Germany and the Polish-German home in the centre of Berlin". The German minister stated that this place should be open to mourning, meetings, education, dialogue, reconciliation and hope.
"We can only accomplish this goal if Poles and Germans follow the way side by side – aware of the past, assured in the strength of reconciliation and firmly determined to work together for a free, peaceful and democratic Europe".
"A decisive step"
The RND portal besides quotes the German government coordinator for cooperation with Polish Knut Abraham, who stated that Monday's stone unveiling was the first but decisive step.
"This temporary monument for Polish victims papers that Germany yet found its way to commemorate the attack on Poland and the business of the neighbouring country during the Second planet War. In a visible way in the center of the German capital. And hopefully shortly in the final form," said RND.
