On Monday to the Monasterz, where the UPA monument is located, on which a plaque with historical fact is placed, a provincial monument conservationist will arrive. The site where the monument is located is covered by conservation care.
Changes on the monument and the collective graves of UPA soldiers located in the monastery close the village of Werchrata (Podkarpackie province), noted Border defender officers last Monday. They rapidly alerted the police.
– We received information on Monday before 10 p.m. A fresh plaque and cross were placed at the memorial site. Police officers sent to the site performed all procedural activities, including inspecting and drawing up photographic documentation – the press officer of the region Police office in Lubaczów, young asp. Marzen Mroczkowska, reported.
There's an inscription on the fresh board that shows the reality:
"The collective grave of Ukrainians, members of the UPA liable for panic and genocide on defenceless Polish, Ukrainian and judaic people. Lord God, have mercy on them, and do not read to them their terrible deeds on their brothers. “Forgive does not mean forgetting, but healing pain”.
The earlier bilingual plaque, in Polish and Ukrainian, only informed that it was "a collective grave of Ukrainians who died in the fight against russian NKVD in the monaster forests on the night of 2rd to 3rd March 1945".
The press officer asp. Marzena Mroczkowska announced that on Monday a provincial monument conservationist would arrive. – The site on which the monument is located belongs to the State Forests, but is managed by a monument conservationist," she added.
The police investigation of the case is supervised by the territory Attorney's Office in Lubaczów. According to her boss, Agnieszka Nieczar-Proszek, the investigation is conducted towards Article 261 of the Criminal Code, which concerns the insult of a monument or another memorial site. “The second course of action under consideration is related to Article 288(1) of the Criminal Code and concerns the demolition of another people’s things,” added the prosecutor.
Government response: ‘aware provocation’
On the monument in the Monasterz, the position was taken by ministers of culture of Poland and Ukraine, who “toughly condemned the act of vandalism against 1 of the Ukrainian memorial sites in Poland”. In a joint message issued on 23 April, they stated that we are dealing with a "aware provocation", which serves, among another things, the interests of the aggressor state – Russia.
