On March 20, a loud incidental occurred at the University of Lodz. Youth activists of All Poland interrupted the lecture by prof. Peter Singer, an Australian philosopher known for his controversial views on euthanasia, abortion and animal rights. During the gathering at the branch of Education Sciences, young activists got up from their seats, shouting “honor” and presenting banners with slogans specified as “stop abortion” or “stop euthanasia”.
The appeal of the All-Polish Youth was ignored
Earlier, MW activists sent an open letter to the university authorities, in which they called for the cancellation of the gathering with prof. Singer. They besides prepared a petition signed by 150 people. However, they reported on social media: “Our appeal has been ignored. So we decided to usage another means by appearing at the lecture and expressing our clear opposition to the views of our “guest”.
Who's Peter Singer?
Peter vocalist is an Australian philosopher whose views have been highly emotional for years. In her entry on the portal X Youth of All Poland, she recalled that vocalist "places animal rights above human dignity". The philosopher compares animal suffering to human suffering and believes that treating animals as a origin of food or experimentation is morally reprehensible.
In an interview with the 2001 German magazine "Der Spiegel", vocalist stated that sexual relations between humans and animals can be acceptable unless they origin animal suffering. It's just 1 of the many controversial ones that she's preaching.
Newborn euthanasia and the moral value of life
The young people of All Poland besides highlighted another aspects of Singer's philosophy. As they stressed, the philosopher argues that newborns, especially those with genetic defects, do not yet have consciousness, and so their lives can be completed if it is in the best interests of the kid or parents.
In his book applicable Ethics, vocalist writes that “the value of life comes not only from being a human being but from having self-consciousness and the ability to feel suffering.” Consequently, the life of a individual in a vegetative state is "less morally worth than the life of a healthy animal".
Another action of the All-Polish Youth
The incidental at the University of Lodz is not the first loud action of the All-Polish Youth in fresh years. Earlier, activists of the organization protested in front of the “Drunk Wiśnia” place, belonging to the Ukrainian company !FEST. There they put red and white tapes with inscriptions: “You don’t know the story, you support the Nazis”, “a region contaminated with flagism”, “by buying in this place you support [banderism]”.
The place promotes the affirmative image of the Ukrainian Insurgency Army (UPA), which has sparked controversy in Poland. Among the advertising elements of the restaurant is simply a graphic depiction of UPA fighters and the character of Roman Szuchewych, the leader of this organization.
Protest in Germany
On 7 March, the Youth of All Poland carried out another action, this time in Germany. In front of the centre for immigrants in Eisenhüttenstadt they hung a banner, protesting migration policy. It brings together immigrants who, in accordance with EU legislation, should apply for asylum in another EU countries, including Poland.
The German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, stressed that people who do not meet the legal requirements for their stay in Germany may be deported to another countries, including Poland. These procedures shall comply with the applicable migration law.
Summary
The actions of the All-Polish Youth inspire utmost emotions, but undoubtedly pay attention to crucial social and ethical issues. The interruption of prof. Singer's lecture is another example of the engagement of young activists in defending values they consider fundamental.
