Pike starts this chapter with an uncompromising assessment of superficial insight. Ceremonies and simple instruction alone are not adequate for a man who truly seeks the truth. Symbols require study, and the dignity received — moral justification.

The "Secret Master" so leads to questions about how to live according to the commitments made. How to keep a secret? To whom, and why, should we obey? What does it mean to be faithful to 1 another, brothers, family, and country?
