Billions for the construction of shelters

Firefighters and construction oversight engineers shall conduct a review of the structures which may constitute collective protection sites in the event of an air hazard. Over 2,000 objects have already been checked. At the same time, the government allocated almost PLN 5 billion to the construction of fresh shelters and adaptation to these buildings. The location of the nearest hiding place is indicated to Poles by the application, which is being developed.

First review

In order to know precisely where to direct the measures, the service must first conduct a review of the facilities that can meet the task of collective protection, specified as cellars, garages or former shelters. Specialists measure their method condition, location, availability and adaptability to modern requirements. Ventilation, tightness or opposition to impact waves are besides important. The review documentation will be the basis for financial support, both for renovations and comprehensive modernisation of existing shelters and for hiding.

The Ministry of Interior and Administration informs that so far the State Fire Department and the region inspectorates of construction supervision have conducted 2,000 specified visits. According to firefighters, over 1,000 protective structures can execute their functions.

At the same time work is underway on creating an application that will inform Poles about the nearest places of refuge. A spokesperson for the Ministry of abroad Affairs Karolina Gałecka told PAP that the Polish website uses Ukrainian experience in this matter. “We are considering different options, specified as whether the application will collect and supply information [...] about shelters and shelters only in their territory, or whether it will be nationwide,” Gałecki added.

At the same time, she recalled that the map on which the nearest shelters and shelters can be checked is already available, among others, on the State Fire Department website.
