On the judaic map of Warsaw, right next to the last fragment of the ghetto wall, a fresh place appeared: Mi Polin Mezuzah Center. In the building at Złota 62 from the side of the yard you can see and learn the past of 205 traces of mezuzach from pre-war Poland. This is the consequence of respective years of work by tandem mezuz seekers. Mi Polin Mezuzah Center is most likely the world's first museum dedicated to mezuzah and mezuzah tracks.
In the historical scenery of Polish-Jewish memory filled with old synagogues and judaic cemeteries, Aleksander Prugar and Helena Czernek found a fresh component of memory – traces of mezuzach. The mezuz in pre-war Poland could be respective million. due to the War and years of communism, virtually all mezuzahs were destroyed leaving nothing but a void in the form of a mezuzah trace.
In collaboration with MI POLIN genealogists, he finds and rebuilds the stories of people – erstwhile residents of houses – most of whom died during the Holocaust.
Since 2013 Helena Czernek and Aleksander Prugar have conducted a search for traces of mezuzae in 160 localities in Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania and Morocco. The consequence of the search is to make the most likely archive of mezuzah traces in the world. Why did the creators spend respective years searching for traces of the mezuzahs, and why did they make Mi Polin Mezuzah Center? As they described their work: “The traces of the mezuzahs are a letter from the past that we read: We, the murdered in the Holocaust, who are no longer present, your erstwhile neighbors, whom you will never know, frequently your household members, with whom you will not live together, leave you something to find us in the future. We leave you a mezuzae trail. I think this is our last chance to find out about us."
