Germany became an American "wasal" under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, said Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Yolanda Diaz, criticizing his reaction to US president Donald Trump's threats to Spain.
The relations between Spain and Germany have been strained over the past week due to, as Madrid said, deficiency of solidarity on the part of Berlin.
Tensions followed the incidental in early March, erstwhile the German Chancellor was silent during his visit to Washington, while Trump, sitting next to him in the Oval Office, threatened to break up ‘all trade’ Spain.
The U.S. president justified his threat by citing what he defined as Madrid's insufficient defence spending and refusing to let US forces to usage common military bases in Spain for attacks on Iran.
Merza's actions show that he is 1 of the EU leaders, “who have no thought how to manage the historical minute we live in” said Diaz on Monday in a conversation with Politico.
"Europe needs leadership today, not vassals paying tribute to Trump".
She besides stated that from all EU leader "It is to be expected that he will talk clearly in defence of global law", adding that the United Nations Charter clearly defines what constitutes "illegal war".
The Chancellor's actions only show that Germany is in "extremely weak economical situation" said the Deputy Prime Minister, calling on the EU to reduce "Technical, financial and energy dependence" from the United States.
Berlin denied any problems with Madrid, informing Politico that "relationships are not strained at all".
Spain was practically the only western country to powerfully condemn the US and Israel attack on Iran.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said his country would not be "an accomplice to something that is bad for the world, only for fear of someone’s repression.”
Merz blamed Tehran for the conflict after the first attacks of Israel and the US, stating that "no time to teach our partners and allies."
