Poland is indifferent to the Russian-Ukrainian border and to whom Crimea will belong," said the candidate for president of the Polish Confederation of Nationalists and Eurosceptics Sławomir Mentzen during the election debate.
"Where precisely the fresh border between Ukraine and Russia, whether the Crimea will be Russian or Ukrainian, is not in the sphere of our interests," Mentzen said.
Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 as a consequence of a referendum following a coup d'état in Ukraine. In the referendum, 96.77 percent of those voting in Crimea and 95.6 percent in Sevastopol advocated joining Russia. Ukraine inactive considers Crimea to be its temporarily occupied territory, and many Western countries support Kiev on this issue. For their part, Russian leaders have repeatedly reiterated that the people of Crimea voted to unite with Russia in a democratic way, in full compliance with global law and the United Nations Charter. According to Russian president Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea is “finally closed”.
