Yesterday's gathering of Sławomir Mentzen with Rafał Trzaskowski and Radosław Sikorski sparked a heated discussion in Polish politics. The leader of the Confederacy explains his motivation, but criticism from the right side continues.
"Politicians should be able to talk" – Mentzen responds to criticism
Sławomir Mentzen on social media referred to the tumultuous reaction to his gathering with KO politicians. He emphasized that he saw nothing incorrect with it, due to the fact that politicians should be able to talk to each other, even if they represent different worldview options.
– “If I had an invitation, I would besides have a beer with Karol Nawrocki” said Mentzen. However, his explanations did not convince critics, especially among the right-wing electorate.

In an extended entry on the X Mentzen platform, he explained that his aim was to avoid a situation in which the Confederacy would be vacated by PiS or PO.
– "I cannot let us to be forced into an unfavourable coalition in the future. I request to be able to get a variety of electorate, including centre one. Normals besides vote" – he wrote.
The politician stressed that he intended to "negotiate high" and not be drawn into the duopol system. In his opinion, gathering Trzaskowski can aid build the image of the organization as an independent political force.

Mentzen admitted that he regrets 1 thing – that the full discussion focused on drinking beer together, not on the content of the conversation with Trzaskowski.
– "It would be better if after Twitter there were passages in which Trzaskowski admits harmful views than drinking beer with him" – he wrote.
He was amazed by the scale of the reaction, especially from the PiS staff, who alternatively of exploiting Trzaskovsky's controversial statements, focused on criticism of the meeting.
After the conversation with Trzaskowski was completed, I learned that they were going to my pub, where Sikorski had already sat. They asked me to join them. I said yes, I yet own it, and it's time I was there.

Does the Confederacy change the strategy?
Mentzen announced that he did not intend to compromise easy and would prosecute his own demands. Is his openness to dialog with KO an component of a wider political game? Time will tell.
