In Poland, the law allows abortion in the event of a threat to the mother's health, but in practice the psychiatric premise has become a gateway to mass killing of unborn children. The infirmary in Oleśnica, which last year performed the most abortions in the country, admitted that all of them were carried out on the basis of this very premise.
According to data obtained by the Life and household Foundation, 155 children were killed in Oleśnica in 2024, including 13 completely healthy, and 62 with Down syndrome. The Foundation warns that this means abortion on request and the elimination of children with genetic defects, which in fact has nothing to do with protecting women's health.
Is the infirmary hiding the truth?
The infirmary in Oleśnica was to boast about the usage of potassium chloride as an abortion method, but did not include this in the authoritative writing. There are suspicions that the institution may not consider this method an abortion, even though the injection of potassium chloride causes the kid to die.
Additionally, although premature babies born after the administration of this substance have a chance of survival, the infirmary did not show any cases of live birth after the abortion.
Psychiatric message – an abortion gate on request?
Experts and politicians point out that abortions on the basis of psychiatric premises are controversial. Many experts believe that intellectual illness cannot be the reason to kill a kid due to the fact that abortion does not solve the mother's intellectual wellness problems.
Prof. Tomasz Czajkowski criticised the current approach in his conversation with “Rink of Health”, stressing that the decision on abortion should be carefully documented. "Such a proceeding requires consultation and documentation to realize precisely the reasons why the deadline is being considered," he said.
Minister of wellness defends doctors
Health Minister Isabella Leszczyna at a press conference stated that a psychiatric premise is simply a adequate basis for legal abortion. "If a psychiatrist's doctor considers pregnancy to be a threat to the intellectual wellness of a woman, specified a certificate is adequate to justify legal abortion," she said. At the same time, she stressed that any effort to challenge specified decisions would be regarded as obstructing access to legal medical services.
The presidential elections are coming up, decisive changes are needed that will actually strengthen the protection of life. The law should clearly state that the function of a doctor is to treat alternatively than to take a life. There is no uncertainty – the Oleśnica case raised public opinion and illustrated how easy the current regulations could be circumvented. The upcoming elections can become a turning point in the fight for better protection of life in Poland.
