After Irene and Julian Tuwimach and Andrzej Stasiuk, it is another large figure of Polish literature that will look at the inhabitants of this town. During a intimate gathering with Gretkowska readers in her style, she took care of a sincere summary of the “changes” which took place during the last 8 years of the PiS regulation – tragic for Polish culture.
The gathering was led by Paulina Frankiewicz from the bookstore “Do Do Do Do”.
– I was very scared, even before the elections, that we would meet in Łódź, where I grew up, and in our country there would be no freedom... – she greeted the audience. – Fortunately, it happened differently due to the fact that Poles went to the polls and we will have it. I've always seen freedom as expanding borders. And art is just expanding borders, so freedom for me is art and culture, so entrenched by the right hand (...).
The writer, referring to her last book entitled "The Cross", on which the cover displays her charms (as a free female would like), told an anecdote about how she sold the home immediately after the triumph of Andrzej Duda in the presidential election erstwhile her husband was eating dinner. She besides recalled how years ago she sought political asylum in France and stateless status.
– These Kaczyński madness and the sick changes that were already during the first PiS regulation reminded me of moments erstwhile I felt I was no longer a free man. My injury to Polishness remained, and from the first emigration I felt like an animal, that something very bad was coming again. Here it comes. Once, France helped me, and 2 years ago, Crete, where I lived in peace with my family.... Now, thanks to the wisdom of most Poles who chose freedom on October 15, we are inactive Europeans. No substance where we live...
Participants of the gathering had the chance to get an overview of all books of the writer. quite a few attention was paid to the individual Andrzej Żuławski, with whom Gretkowska was associated. The author concluded at the end of the drama of contemporary cultures, which were humiliated by the inactive ruling party.
– If the PiS had won the election now, the Minister of Culture would have been Bąkiewicz. For Kaczyński, a man with a megaphone would be the most excellent candidate (...)
When asked how Poland imagined after the change of power, she replied:
– What we will experience will be something between the vast nightmare of PiS and our dreams...
