Alaksandr Lukashenka on 24 August, on the 35th anniversary of the independency Day of Ukraine, made the Ukrainians want their health, prosperity, peace and happiness. Minsk's authoritative message spoke of "eternal bonds of friendship", although since 2022 the Belarusian government has supported Russia in its aggression against Ukraine. It's a propaganda gesture, not a change of course.
Minsk wishes on the anniversary of independence
On 24 August, Alaksandr Lukashenka addressed wishes to the Ukrainian people on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independency Day. Minsk's message states that future generations will hold “the eternal bonds of relationship and kinship”. Since 2022 Belarus has remained Russia's base in the war against Ukraine. Minsk does not request to send its own divisions to the front to bear political work for the direction taken by the Kremlin. The territory, infrastructure and state apparatus of Belarus were subject to the logic of Russian pressure.
Therefore, Lukashenko's wishes must be read as a political message, not as a private Christmas card. For Poland this case matters more than a diplomatic curiosity. Belarus lies at our border and its government participates in the Russian game against the safety of the region. Poles know well that words about relationship are the cheapest currency in east politics. Decisions, troops, boundaries and alliances matter.
This does not mean hostility towards the Belarusians as a nation. On the contrary, free Belarus is in Poland's interests. This is evidenced by the memory of opposition environments and people who paid the price for opposition to dictatorship. We were just reminding tribute to free Belarus after the death of Alaksandr Milinkiewicz, a symbol of opposition to the Lukashenko system.
Ukraine celebrates under force of war
Ukraine celebrates independency Day in conditions of war and constant Russian pressure. It is besides a test for the West, which frequently likes large declarations, but delays decisions where circumstantial defence capabilities are needed. Poland should look east coolly: support the real independency of nations threatened by Russian imperialism, defender its own borders and do not confuse wishes with facts.
