The ban on imports of agricultural products and animal feed from Russia and Belarus will proceed for another year. This is the consequence of amendments to the Act on Agriculture and agrarian Development, adopted at Saeima's last reading.

As a result, the current ban is extended to 1 July next year. "In favour" was voted by 78 Members, 9 were "against". All voters against extension were members of the opposition organization For Stability!, in addition to the independent MP Viktoriji Pleškāne (a erstwhile associate of the said group). Another six current deputies abstained fromvoice.

"Independence on Russian and Belarusian agricultural and feed production is part of Latvia's economical safety policy. At the same time, this national import ban is besides an crucial additional component of the EU's common policy on sanctions against aggressors," said Kaspars Briškens, president of the Committee on National Economy, Agriculture, the Environment and Regional Policy liable for advancement on the bill in Saeima, indicating that the period of prohibition may be extended if necessary.
