Lithuanian border guards will present a fresh helicopter, which will service to escort Russian trains passing between Belarus and an exclave princess on the Baltic coast.
"This chopper will aid strengthen the surveillance of trains going to and from the royal circuit," said Minister of Interior Vladislav Kondratovič.
Ms Beate Gminder, acting Director-General for Migration and Home Affairs at the European Commission, is to take part in the presentation of the chopper at the Paluknys Air Force Base in the municipality of Troki. Gminder will besides meet Kondratovič in Vilnius.
"We are presently focusing on 2 priorities: improving the management of our national and external borders of the EU and implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum," said Kondratovič. The European Commission has allocated EUR 25 million to aid guarantee the safety of the peculiar Transit Programme, which allows Russia to send freight and passenger trains through Lithuania.
The State Border defender Service has informed that it has utilized the funds to acquisition a modern helicopter, another vehicles and specialised equipment to improve the management of the safety risks associated with the programme.
