Lithuania will celebrate the Baltic Energy independency Day on 9 February starting next year. On 9 February that year, the Baltic States detached from the Russian electricity grid and merged with the continental European system.
On Tuesday, the Parliament of Lithuania adopted an amendment to the Act on Days of Memory with 102 votes in favour, no votes against and six abstentions.
According to Algirdas Butkevičius of the Democratic Union “In the name of Lithuania”, part of the ruling coalition, Latvia and Estonia will shortly make akin decisions.
According to the Democrats, on 9 February 2025, it is an event of historical and applicable importance for both the Baltic and European countries, strengthening energy independency and resilience of the full region and uniting Lithuania with the European energy family.
"This resulted in 65 years of dependence erstwhile the management of frequencies in the energy systems of the Baltic countries was dependent on Russia," the Democrats who proposed an amendment to the Memorial Days Act.
