In the Balvi region in the north-east of Latvia, at the border with Russia, work began on the construction of the Baltic Defence Line, a series of fortifications planned along the east borders of the Baltic countries, said the Latvian State Real property Agency on Tuesday.
As part of a task to strengthen NATO's east flank, engineering works will be carried out, including anti-tank ditches and objects specified as rows of concrete obstacles, alleged dragon teeth. The strengthening belt, for which more than EUR 12 million is foreseen from the state budget, is expected to be completed in the autumn of 2027.
Earlier this year, the Latvian armed forces built a test section of the Baltic Defence Line on the Selija camp on the River Dzwina. In creating dams and bunkers, engineering troops and bomb squads collaborated with US Army units and Danish armed forces stationed in the region.
