Latvia's armed forces reported on Monday on platform X that over the east part of the country NATO fighters shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace. This is the first case of an unmanned man being shot down over Latvia by the Alliance forces. The incidental did not origin any casualties or damage.
The defence minister Colonel Raivis Melnis told journalists that it is presently impossible to find the country from which the drone was launched, or the kind of machine. No casualties or material harm were reported in connection with the incident," he added.
The drone entered Latvian airspace from Russia as a consequence of the usage of electromagnetic countermeasures by this country - reported the Latvian army, as quoted by Reuters. The usage of specified means of fighting on the Russian side was reported shortly before the drone entered and shot down at 10.05 local time (9.05 in Poland) close a village located about 30 km from the border with Russia.
