AHMEDABAD- A devastating Air India (AI) crash near Ahmedabad has claimed the lives of a London-based couple who had already suffered the loss of their pilot son in a previous aviation tragedy.

The victims, returning from a religious celebration in Gujarat, perished when the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (AMD), leaving 241 of 242 passengers dead.

Couple Lost Lives in Air India Crash

The couple, members of the Hindu community in north-west London, had traveled to India for a religious observance and were aboard the ill-fated flight back when the aircraft experienced a catastrophic engine failure.

According to Shri Rajrajeshwar Guruji, spiritual head of Siddhashram Shakti Centre in Harrow, their grief had been compounded by the loss of their only son, a pilot who had died in a previous crash in France.

Mr. Guruji said he personally knew at least 20 people who died in the accident, many of whom were regular worshippers at his temple.

“This couple had gone to India for a religious celebration; they were coming back, and now this has happened. After what has happened to their son as well, it’s just terrible to think about,” he stated.

He last spoke to some of the victims only two weeks before the crash. Most of the deceased were over the age of 40, either visiting elderly family or returning from religious duties. Some had children enrolled in UK universities and had extended their visits accordingly.

Accountability from the Airline

The fatal incident has triggered a wave of grief and calls for accountability across the UK’s Hindu diaspora.

“This is the most shocking news we have ever experienced in the temple’s 25-year history. We want answers from the airline,” Guruji demanded. “They were travelling by plane, they weren’t travelling by car.”

The aircraft reportedly reached an altitude of 625 feet before it plummeted to the ground. The sole survivor, identified as Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, remains in critical condition.

Mr. Guruji confirmed he knew the family personally and plans to visit them in Leicester this Sunday.

The exact cause of the power failure remains under investigation. A passenger on the same aircraft earlier that day, flying from Delhi (DEL) to Ahmedabad (AMD), posted a video on X showing “unusual things in the plane.”

Reported by the Daily Star, the footage has added to the mounting questions surrounding the jet’s mechanical reliability.

Cultural Impact

In Harrow and the surrounding areas of north-west London, Hindu temples held prayer vigils to honor the lives lost.

The impact is described as “indescribable” by community leaders. “When we ask people how they are, everyone knows they are sad, there is nothing more to say,” Guruji added.

The loss is not just of individuals, but of pillars of families and the spiritual community. For a couple already bereaved by a previous aviation disaster, this second blow has left many shaken, with collective mourning across the diaspora.
