Health Minister Izabel Leszczyna announced changes in abortion law, calling the current provisions "unacceptable" and "cause of women's dramas". Her message came just before the first circular of the presidential election.
He qualified for the second round, which will take place on 1 June, among others. Rafał Trzaskowski – opposition candidate openly supporting the liberalisation of abortion rules.
During the press conference, Leszczyna stressed: “The anti-abortion rules should be amended after the terrible judgement of the Constitutional Court of Poland. We all know that," said the head of the wellness department.
As she explained, it is simply a judgement of October 2020 that banned abortion in the event of severe defects of an unborn child. According to the Minister, this ruling led to dramatic situations for both women and doctors:
"This is the origin of many sufferings, dramas and tragedies of women and the uncertainty and concerns of doctors," she noted.
Case with Oleśnica
Leschina was asked about the case from the infirmary in Oleśnica, where as the media revealed – in the infirmary abortion took place in 36 weeks of pregnancy. A kid diagnosed with congenital bone fractures was killed on the basis of a intellectual wellness hazard for the mother. Although this illness involves suffering, it does not compromise the child's chances of life – besides outside the womb.
A Euro MP Grzegorz Braun went to the facility, trying to intervene after the fact, to halt the continued activity of a doctor who, as he claimed, acted contrary to medical ethics and reconciled the life of a kid capable of acting independently. The MP acted in the name of the protection of the weakest—those who cannot defend themselves.
The Minister of wellness commented: “This situation for patients, doctors and wellness minister is simply a terrible, unacceptable situation, and I will do anything to change it.
However, she did not mention to the tragedy of an unborn kid who, despite the advanced phase of pregnancy, was deliberately deprived of life. Instead, she focused on the criticism of Grzegorz Braun:
“Such politicians as Mr Braun are besides liable for the escalation of aggression against medical workers,” said Leszczyna.
Condition: Change of President
Health Minister Isabella Leszczyna makes changes in abortion law dependent on the result of the ongoing race for presidency.
"I hope that Rafał Trzaskowski will win and as a Democratic candidate will sign a bill that will come out of the Sejm", she said, making it clear that she advocates deep liberalisation of the existing rules.
At the same time, she admitted that if the current Parliament is incapable to push forward with far-reaching changes, it is ready to support the return to the alleged abortion compromise – that is, the provisions in force before the 2020 Constitutional Court ruling.
Statements by the wellness minister leave no illusions: the current authority announces actions that can open the door to even wider legalization of abortion. Although these changes are presented as a concern for women's health, in practice they can lead to the systematic taking of lives of unborn children – including those capable of surviving outside the womb. This is not a step forward, but a decision distant from the civilization of life, in which all human existence – regardless of age, wellness or circumstances of conception – deserves protection.
The issue of abortion in the 36th week of pregnancy, which Minister Leschina de facto justifies, raises a question about the limits of humanity and medical ethics. Can a kid who is capable of surviving outside her mother's body be legally killed?
In the face of the upcoming 2nd circular of presidential elections, the voice of all citizen can find whether Poland will stay a country that protects life from conception, or will go on the way of liberalisation, which, as Western practice shows, ends with abortion on request. June 1st, let's choose life.
