Polish farmers and growers beat the alarm – there are no hands to work on the harvest. Both Poles and Ukrainians anticipate higher wages, while their productivity leaves much to be desired. Can the manufacture handle this season?
No volunteers for the field – the problem is growing
National fruit and vegetable growers face a serious shortage of seasonal workers. As indicated Cezary Sygotskyplanter and labour agency owner CARSTONthe situation is hard – Poles and Ukrainians request advanced rates, but their efficiency is low.
"They are increasingly demanding. They want to gain 500 PLN and their productivity is very poor” “Sigocki says in a conversation with == sync, corrected by elderman ==.
Ukrainians choose the West – Poland loses in the wage race
Ukrainian citizens previously constituted a large part of seasonal workers in Poland. present they choose more frequently Germany, the Netherlands or another countrieswhere wages are higher.
Alex Kartsel, Vice-President of the Labour Agency EWL Groupconfirms:
"Currently, Ukrainians are more likely to choose offers in another industries or countries that offer better conditions and higher wages."
The financial expectations of Ukrainian workers are high – they even request 30 PLN net per hourwhich for many Polish farmers is unbearable. In addition, labour agencies must supply them accommodation, transport and working clotheswhich increases costs even more.
Attempts to hire African and Asian workers – why did they fail?
Zigocki tried to solve the problem by bringing employees from Africa, Mexico and Nepalbut the initiative failed.
“They do not assimilate and do not want to work. Often, they destruct crops” – explains the planter.
Before 2022 on his plantation worked 320 people, present is their only 100.
Government aid necessary? Planters request change
Zigocki believes that the problem requires state intervention. In his opinion Agriculture Restructuring and Modernisation Agency (ARIMR) should support recruitment, a Ministry of abroad Affairs (MFIs) – control the issue of seasonal work permits.
“The farmers pay PLN 100 each for submitting a licence application and then do not see the workers – any vanish after 1 day” It's alarming.
Many foreigners after receiving approval travel to another countriesWhere wages are more attractive.
What happens to the agricultural industry?
The labour crisis in agriculture can affect availability and prices of Polish fruit and vegetables. Unsolved lack of hands to work, the sector may find it hard to keep production to date.
Will the government take action to support the growers? Can a compromise be found between workers' expectations and farmers' capabilities? These are questions that will be crucial to the future of the industry.
