Kosiniak-Kamysz: The next twelve months will be crucial for security

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, stated at a Monday conference in Warsaw, organized by the Foundation. Kazimierz Pulaski on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Poland's accession to NATO under the title "Safety Ensuring, Responding to Challenges", that the next twelve months will be crucial to Poland's safety due to what may happen in Ukraine.

On the question of the actions which Poland should take to strengthen the unity of the partner countries in terms of both assistance to Ukraine and preparation for possible worst-case scenarios, the Deputy Prime Minister stated that the main task of NATO now is to consider the prospects of the next 25 years of the Alliance, or even the next 25 months.

"In my opinion, the next twelve months will be crucial for the safety of Poland due to what may happen in Ukraine. The war cannot be tamed, it cannot be accepted” He stressed.

The Minister besides stressed the request to take action to rise public awareness in the context of possible threats and prepare for their effective response.

"Army forces, citizens, non-governmental organisations, state institutions – each 1 to have a circumstantial place. That is why we put so much effort on creating the strongest civilian protection law" - he explained. He added that he would be working on it this week – together with the head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs Marcin Kierwiński.

As an illustration of this action, he gave an example of Sweden, where the peculiar Office for civilian Protection operates.

"Everyone started talking about the imminent threat of Russia's war in Sweden – at the time she was not a NATO member. It was a clear signal to awaken the public that we could not get utilized to the war” – explained.

In Kosiniak-Kamisha's words, the key difference between Western countries and Russia lies in their approach to valuing human life.

"The Russian Federation, and before that the russian Union always represented the same, deficiency of respect for life, disregard for its own losses. Western civilization cannot accept that bombs are flying and children are dying," he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that being in NATO is not only a substance of military choice, but besides of civilization choice. "Poland has always proved that we are a country of the West and we stand on this side," he said. "Strengthen these values, strengthen this structure," he called for.

As measures that are possible and essential to support the east flank of NATO, he indicated, among another things, the placement of as many military units as possible in Poland and our closest allies, as well as the carrying out of joint military exercises and training.
