The South Korean authorities decided on Tuesday to retreat any of their staff from their embassy in Ukraine. As has been explained, this step is the consequence of a deficiency of "constructive" action by the Kiev authorities in the ongoing diplomatic dispute and concerns about the safety of personnel in relation to Russia's continued attacks.
— The government has decided to evacuate part of the diplomatic mission staff, given that the Ukrainian side has not taken any constructive action after the callback of the Ukrainian ambassador. [It besides happened] due to the continued threat of air strikes throughout the country, making it hard to guarantee safety (employees)," said Seoul abroad Ministry spokesperson Park Du Sun.
In consequence to the question whether the withdrawal of diplomatic staff represents a diplomatic protest, the spokesperson pointed out that the decision was taken in consequence to the deficiency of expected changes in Kiev's attitude despite erstwhile repeated signals from Seoul.
The Ombudsman clarified that the charge d'affaires would stay on site to keep the essential communication between the capitals. Also, the consular staff will not leave the premises, who will proceed to defend South Korean citizens.
Tuesday's decision is simply a further decision by the South Korean authorities, testifying to the increasing crisis in relations with Ukraine since September.
