The activists of the Confederation of the Polish Crown announce on September 5 a demonstration on the marketplace in Kępno against the influx of legal and illegal immigrants. The protest will coincide with the 3 Culture Festival, scheduled for September 4-6. The dispute is not about folklore, but about whether local communities have the right to talk out about security.
Protest in the mediate of the city holiday
According to Radio Poznań, activists of the Confederation of the Polish Crown intend to protest in Kępno against the influx of legal and illegal immigrants to Poland. The show was announced on 5 September in the market, during the 3 Cultures Festival. It's a choice of place and date, which necessarily gives the substance a public dimension.
The festival itself is to last from September 4 to 6. Kępinski Culture Centre informsthat the program includes concerts, meetings, lectures, workshops and events devoted to the city's heritage. On Saturday, the most extended part of the program was planned, including a historical walk and subsequent events in the center of Kępna.
Security is not a prohibited subject
Left-liberal public opinion likes to bring any opposition to migration policy to bad emotions. It's convenient due to the fact that it slows down the answers to simple questions. Who is to bear the costs of integration? Who is liable for public order? Who decides how many foreigners can accept a local community and on what principles?
Poland is not a hotel without reception. The state has the right to control borders, the self-government has the right to ask about the consequences of decisions taken above the heads of the inhabitants, and citizens have the right to protest. Especially erstwhile there is already a price for open-door policies in Western Europe: force on public services, social tensions and an expanding problem with law enforcement.
In this sense, the Kępinian manifestation forms part of a wider dispute over state sovereignty. DN has already written about civil task "Stop Pact" and dispute over the limits of Polish sovereignty. This is the same direction of debate: whether migration will be decided by Poles, whether mechanisms and pressures imposed from outside.
Festival, Memory and Real Politics
The Festival of 3 Cultures refers to the past of Kępna and its multi-denominational heritage. However, this should not mean that the current debate on migration is to be excluded from public space. The memory of the old neighbourhood of cultures is not an argument for giving up the work of the state today.
The difference is fundamental. The town's heritage is simply a concrete history, embedded in a place, time and community. Mass migration in the 21st century is simply a political, legal and economical decision. It can be supported or rejected, but it is not allowed to pretend that it does not concern the safety of Poles.
The Confederation of the Polish Crown has been trying to build its own message about sovereignty and opposition to the federalization of the Union for months. At Grunwald, her representatives talked about sovereignty versus competence for Brussels. Kępno is to be a local section of the same political war, conducted no longer in abstraction, but in the city market.
Right to object and limits of responsibility
One thing is important: a protest against migration policy must not mean contempt for people. A tough country doesn't request hate. He needs law, control, services, honest information and courage to tell the people the fact about the consequences of migration decisions.
If the power is trying to turn the subject of migration into taboos, it works itself into social anger. It is better for citizens to talk clearly and publically than for tensions to emergence quietly. For Poland, the stake is obvious: street safety, cohesion of local communities, the cost of public services and the right of the people to decide their own home.
