dailyblitz.de 7 hours ago

BOSTON- JetBlue Airways (B6) has expanded its transatlantic service from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) with the launch of new nonstop routes to Madrid, Spain (MAD) and Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI). These daily seasonal flights, running through October 25, 2025, bolster JetBlue’s position as New England’s leading leisure carrier.

These additions mark JetBlue’s (B6) first-ever route to Spain and strengthen its European network from BOS. The airline also resumes its seasonal route to London Gatwick (LGW), offering travelers more transatlantic options directly from Boston.

JetBlue New Europe Routes

JetBlue’s new services to Madrid and Edinburgh reflect its broader JetForward strategy to build the strongest leisure travel network on the U.S. East Coast. The airline continues to position Boston Logan (BOS) as a vital hub for transatlantic travel by offering nonstop connections to key European cities.

These newly launched routes complement JetBlue’s existing service from BOS to London-Heathrow (LHR), Paris (CDG), Amsterdam (AMS), Dublin (DUB), and London-Gatwick (LGW). By summer 2025, JetBlue will operate seven daily nonstop flights between Boston and Europe.

Madrid (MAD) becomes JetBlue’s inaugural destination in Spain and represents the only nonstop link between Boston and the Spanish capital by a U.S. airline

Likewise, the new BOS–EDI route strengthens the airline’s Scottish footprint, complementing its seasonal service from New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK).

Why Madrid and Edinburgh Matter?

Madrid (MAD) offers a vibrant mix of historic and modern attractions, from the Royal Palace and Prado Museum to tapas bars and flamenco shows. It also serves as a central gateway to other Spanish destinations, enhancing its appeal for U.S. travelers.

Edinburgh (EDI) draws visitors with its iconic castle, medieval Old Town, and world-famous arts festivals. JetBlue’s direct service from BOS brings more flexibility to leisure and cultural travelers heading to Scotland.

These routes create new opportunities for tourism, business, and cultural exchange, benefiting both New England and European communities.

Competition on Transatlantic Routes

Data from Cirium’s Diio tool, as flagged by Simple Flying, shows that Iberia (IB) exclusively served the route from 2007 until July 2017.

Air Europa (UX) briefly offered three weekly flights between Boston and Madrid from July to August 2017. Norwegian Airlines (DY) entered the market in May 2019 but ceased service in October of the same year.

Iberia returned as the sole operator of Boston–Madrid flights until JetBlue’s recent entry. The Spanish carrier resumed the route post-pandemic and upgraded equipment in November 2024, deploying its A321XLR aircraft. Iberia increased capacity with a second daily A321XLR flight beginning March 18, 2025.

JetBlue’s presence on the route reflects its broader transatlantic ambitions but comes during a financially cautious phase. The airline introduced its JetForward strategy in July 2024, aimed at restoring profitability. Key to the plan is deferring $3 billion in capital expenditures through 2029. These funds were initially allocated for aircraft acquisitions, including pre-delivery payments.

JetBlue’s revised fleet plan indicates it will receive 11 A321neo aircraft between 2024 and 2025—seven in 2024 and four in 2025. The remaining 44 aircraft deliveries are scheduled beyond 2029. According to ch-aviation, JetBlue added five A321neo and two A321LR aircraft in 2024. No new A321neo or A321LR aircraft have been delivered to the airline in 2025.

Elsewhere in the transatlantic market from Boston, Delta Air Lines (DL) remains the only carrier operating flights to Edinburgh. It launched the route in June 2019, paused during the pandemic, and resumed in June 2022. Delta currently offers seasonal service using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
