ME
[...] I became a victim of hatred attacks for 1 reason: I am a writer and I am curious in how propaganda spread by the Kremlin works in Finnish social media.
When I began a worldwide news investigation of Russian trolls in September 2014, I was 33 years old. I had a peaceful life and dreamed of starting a family. I had no enemies, no criminals, no members of extremist organizations.
As a journalist, I specialized in the themes of the erstwhile russian Union, propaganda and extremist movements. I had previously lived in Russia, and throughout the period of Vladimir Putin's presidency, I observed forms of force on journalists, noted cases of beatings and killings. [...]
But it was only an article for Yle, my employer, about the effects of the fresh methods of the Kremlin's conduct of the information war outside Russia that led to a reaction that safety experts have described as unusual.
I was so anxious to end up investigating Russian operations for my own good, not to mention reporting them to the public. [...]
Before I left Finland, I did everything I could to halt the hatred or at least limit his paralyzing influence on me and my work. I reported to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube dozens of fake users who broke the service regulations with threats and names at my address. "They do not violate the principles of our community," replied net giants, although it was clear that both the regulations of the network and the law of Finland were being violated. Social media have served as a platform for state propaganda. [...]
I have already proved that Russian disinformation on social media threatens civilian dialog and safety in many different countries. I warned the public about the Kremlin, which sought to make a friendly climate in Western countries.
After my warnings, Russian trolls attacked the 2016 U.S. presidential election, accelerated Britain's exit from the European Union in 2016, lobbied for Catalan independency in 2017 and inciting riots during protests of yellow vests in France from 2018 to 2019.
My lyrics were widely cited. Students, diplomats and data protection and safety specialists appreciated them very much. I was invited to various parts of the world, and I was given training. I interviewed and helped journalists track propaganda in their countries.
But erstwhile I was walking down the street in Finland, I had to look behind me. Studies on extremist movements have shown that hateful texts affect hateful acts. [...]
And due to the fact that I inactive wanted to work as a journalist, compose this book, share news, and make others aware – and besides lead a simple, boring life and fulfill the biggest dream of having a baby and having a baby – I had to leave. [...]
A MODERN warrant OF THE MAINTENANCE
Russian decision-makers have opened a fresh front for the information war. The mark were civilians in Russia and abroad.
In St. Petersburg, little than 400 kilometres from Helsinki, fakes and lies were produced for social media. The alleged troll mill was exposed due to the fact that courageous Russian journalists infiltrated it and made all the information they had acquired public.
Trolls received a monthly wage for the fact that the social media pretended to be real people with developed views, led false profiles, updated them and filled the net with praises of president Vladimir Putin and criticism of the Russian opposition and the United States. [...]
I was accompanied by a typical of the people of Rohingja Tun Khin and the Americans Ethan Lindenberger and Lenny Pozner. Tun Khin told how social media were utilized to incite the genocide of Rohingja's people, and Ethan Linderberger presented their usage for agitation for the anti-vaccine movement.
Lenny Pozner was forced to decision multiple times. His boy Noah was murdered during a shooting at Sandy Hook School in 2012, but social media claims that the boy did not be at all, and Pozner is “a dummy in practice”. This explanation was spread by Alex Jones of InfoWars, whose followers endanger to kill a man. Lenny engages in the cases of Jones' victims and another instigators, but threats proceed and must be hidden.
I was expecting specifics. After our Twitter visit, he removed 1 general account liable for the Myanmar genocide, and Facebook shut down an anti-vaccination group. But in Finnish-speaking social media, Kremlin puppets and haters can inactive trample on the rights of another people.
In Finland, it was alarming for many people to be brainwashed to specified an degree that they believed that humiliating others on the basis of articles that, according to a court ruling, violate the law, and stalking individual on the net is “the average exercise of freedom of speech”. They caused large fear and included self-censorship, not just in me.
