In 4 years of full-scale war in Ukraine, thousands of civilians and soldiers died. Over 20 percent of the country's territory is inactive under occupation. However, the war not only took distant the Ukrainians from their loved ones and the land – it besides took distant the acquainted rituals of farewell and mourning. The bodies of the dead do not return from occupied areas, the soldiers' graves stay empty, and the cemeteries are destroyed by fire. Among pain and fire, Ukrainians are forced to construct fresh ways to experience mourning and commemorate the dead.
