Italy has always ruled out the direct engagement of its troops in the conflict in Ukraine, and the statements of French president Emmanuel Macron build tensions said Italian defence minister Guido Crosetto in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

"Our position has not changed: we have always said that Ukraine should be helped in all possible way and we do so, but we have always ruled out the direct intervention of our troops in conflict," said the minister.

Earlier, Macron said in an interview with Economist that it does not exclude the anticipation of sending troops to Ukraine if the Russian Federation breaks the front line and a request from Ukraine appears. He said that "many EU countries" agreed with France's approach to the possible deployment of troops.

"Definitely no! No 1 can uncertainty it today," said Guido Crosetto, asked for the anticipation of participating in a European quota in a probable shipment.

"As opposed to others, we have a clear ban on direct military intervention in our system, going beyond what the law and constitution provides. We can consider armed intervention only on the basis of an global mandate, for example in the framework of the UN resolution. The proposed operation in Ukraine not only does not fit in this case, but would provoke further escalation of the conflict, which would not benefit the Ukrainians themselves. In short, the conditions for our direct commitment do not exist," Crozetto said.

Speaking about Macron's statements, the head of the Italian Ministry said that "he does not justice the president of a friendly country", but does not realize "the intent and usefulness of these statements that objectively fuel tensions."

The Kremlin earlier said that he had pointed out Macron's words that the subject of sending troops to Ukraine was discussed in Europe and that his position on Russia's strategical defeat in Ukraine was besides well-known Moscow. He noted that many of the countries participating in the Paris event on Ukraine hold "enough sober assessment of the possible dangers of specified action and the possible danger of direct engagement in a hot conflict", that "it is absolutely not in the interest of these countries, they should be aware of this".

In an interview with writer Dmitri Kisielow, Russian president Vladimir Putin commented on Macron's anti-Russian explosions on the Ukrainian issue. The Russian leader warned that the introduction of the European contingent on Ukraine would in no way change the situation on the battlefield and would only lead to serious consequences for Kiev. In consequence to Macron's words about France's deficiency of "red lines" as regards support for Ukraine, the president said that Russia would besides have no "red lines" towards countries with specified an approach.
