The Hungarian government does not regulation out that an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which decimates cattle and swine, may have been artificially induced. The authorities have commissioned experts and services to analyse in item to find the origin of the virus.
Suspects of artificial origin of the virus
During a Thursday press conference, Gergely Gulyas, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister's office, reported that an investigation into a possible unnatural origin of the epidemic had been launched.
– It cannot be excluded that the pathogen is not of natural origin, but was artificially created said Gulyas. He added that the government had asked laboratories and epidemiologists to analyse the virus to find whether there was actually deliberate action.
At the same time, the authoritative acknowledged that There's no evidence of a biological attack at the moment.. Nevertheless, the authorities take the substance very seriously and the results of the investigation may affect further preventive action.
The magnitude of the epidemic and the global consequences
Since March, erstwhile the outbreak broke out, Hungary has been killed nearly 5 000 infected animals.
