The Iraqi government considered the return of Christians who left the country as a consequence of many years of force and persecution as a "national and government priority".
Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi announced support for returning families, including the anticipation of utilizing
from the state's grant strategy for 1 million housing parcels.
The Prime Minister made a declaration at a gathering in Baghdad
with the recently elected Chaldean patriarch Paul III Nona. He assured the government’s willingness to make conditions conducive to the return and participation of Christians
in rebuilding the country.
According to the organization Aid to the Church in Need, the number of Christians in Iraq has decreased from about 1.5 million in 2000 to little than 300,000 today.
