On May 8, many events will be held to commemorate the end of planet War II. The German MFA wants to prevent Russia from utilizing them for propaganda purposes.

The Ministry of abroad Affairs of Germany wants to prevent the instrumentalisation of events commemorating the end of planet War II 80 years ago. According to the Berlin Zeitung newspaper, the hotel has issued a brochure recommending that the German districts and municipalities do not invitation Russian and Belarusian diplomats and, if necessary, even send uninvited guests.

“We reject propaganda”

In consequence to a question from the DPA press agency, the ministry did not comment straight on these reports. "Germany accepts work for the terrible crimes of the Nazi government and is obliged to guarantee that victims are decently honored in Russia, Belarus and around the world," said the MFA.

“ That is why we explicitly reject all propaganda of the Second planet War by Russia in order to justify the Russian war against Ukraine that violates global law, ” says the Communication. We powerfully argue the revisionist historical and Russian or Belarusian propaganda.’

No invitation to Russia and Belarus

According to the Berlin Zeitung, the recommendations of the Ministry of abroad Affairs regarding the appropriate actions state that, in principle, no authoritative German body should participate in the events organised by Russia and Belarus, nor should representatives of Russia and Belarus be invited to commemoration ceremonies organised by federal, national and local authorities. This was confirmed by DPA in the government circles of Brandenburg.

The Brandenburg Memorial Foundation – which includes, among others, Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück memorial sites – announced that it plans to exclude representatives of the Russian and Belarusian embassies from the Jubilee events.

Memoration at Seelow Hills

For example, in Brandenburg next Wednesday (16.04.2025) will be a celebration commemorating the 80th anniversary of the conflict of Seelow Hill. Representatives of the Russian embassy announced their presence, as reported by the deputy politician of Märkisch-Oderland County. Friedemann Hanke (CDU) added that intimate celebrations are planned, “without creating a political scene”.

The conflict of Seelow Hill is considered the largest planet War II conflict on German soil. According to the Seelow Hill Memorial Museum, tens of thousands of soldiers were killed on the German and russian sides just a fewer days before the end of the war.

In consequence to the request, the Ministry of the Interior of Brandenburg informed that, at the request of the Kanclary Office, it had sent to the counties and independent cities "the leaflet of the national Ministry of abroad Affairs on events commemorating the end of the war 80 years ago". The letter contained no assessment or instructions from the Ministry of the Interior.
