IndiGo Assaults Cabin Crew

The recent assault is not an isolated incident but part of a concerning trend of passenger misconduct on IndiGo flights.

Multiple incidents over the past two years demonstrate a pattern of aggressive behavior toward cabin crew members, raising questions about passenger screening and onboard security measures.

On May 2, 2025, the passenger, identified as Sandeep Sumer Singh from Churu, Rajasthan, allegedly touched the flight attendant inappropriately near the aircraft’s lavatory.

Following established protocols, the distressed crew member immediately reported the incident to her manager, who alerted security personnel upon arrival at Shirdi Airport (SAG). Police confirmed that a medical examination verified alcohol consumption by the accused.

“We are aware of an incident on flight 6E 6404 from Delhi to Shirdi where a customer behaved inappropriately towards cabin crew,” IndiGo stated. “Our crew followed standard procedures, and the customer was declared unruly. Upon landing, the customer was handed over to security agencies.”

Similar Incidents

The aviation industry has witnessed similar concerning incidents involving passenger misconduct toward IndiGo staff:

In May 2023, authorities arrested passenger Rajinder Singh after he misbehaved with a crew member on IndiGo flight 6E 1428 from Dubai to Amritsar (ATQ). The accused, who was intoxicated during the incident, was remanded to judicial custody after physically assaulting a female crew member.

In another shocking incident, a passenger physically attacked an IndiGo pilot who was announcing flight delays. Viral footage showed a man in a yellow hoodie rushing from the last row to strike the replacement pilot. The aggressor, identified as Sahil Kataria, faced charges under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and aircraft rules.

Airline Response and Safety Protocols

IndiGo Airlines has implemented standardized response protocols for handling unruly passengers, including:

  1. Immediate reporting of incidents to senior cabin crew
  2. Declaration of passengers as “unruly” when appropriate
  3. Handover to security personnel upon landing
  4. Filing formal complaints with local authorities

The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) maintains strict Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) to ensure crew readiness and safety. These regulations mandate adequate rest periods for pilots and flight attendants to prevent fatigue-related safety concerns.

Public Reaction and Legal Consequences

Public response to these incidents has been overwhelmingly critical of the passengers involved, with many social media users calling for placement on no-fly lists and criminal prosecution. While some commenters acknowledge airline communication issues during delays, there is consensus that physical assault remains unacceptable under any circumstances.

Legal consequences for unruly passengers typically include:

  • Judicial custody during investigation
  • Criminal charges under the Indian Penal Code
  • Violations of aircraft safety rules
  • Potential inclusion on no-fly lists
