According to sociologist Dorota Peretitukowicz (Socialist Initiative.pl), the first survey of opinion among refugees from Ukraine, conducted at the beginning of the war, showed a deficiency of sympathy towards Poles. However, these results were not made public for fear of a negative social reaction.
Unpublished studies and social reactions
The Sociologist explains that the studies were negative due to the conditions in which respondents were present. Ukrainians were in a state of wartime shock — fleeing aggression, and Poland was frequently only a phase for them, a transit country, alternatively than a destination. As a result, the results were hidden and the interviewers felt that “we said that the survey 'did not work out'.”
Did the respondents feel grateful?
When sociologists asked whether the Ukrainians felt gratitude to Poles for their admission, the answer was clear — no. Respondents did not want to feel dependent, did not want to be seen as “grateful orphans” and did not want their situation to be portrayed by a debt of gratitude.
