Hungary unexpectedly cancelled talks with Ukraine on 12 May on the situation of national minorities in Zakarpacie. Budapest's decision is simply a direct consequence of the charge of espionage by the flagship services, which led to the common expulsion of diplomats and further deepening of tensions between neighbouring countries.

According to information disclosed by Ukrainian portal European Truth, consultations were to take place in Uzhhoroda and were to launch a series of regular negotiations on the implementation of 11 requests previously made by the Hungarian side. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, the agreement on this substance was reached in Budapest.

Spy scandal and diplomatic retortions

The reason for breaking the talks was to escalate tensions after the Ukrainian safety Service (SBU) accused Hungary of the activities of military intelligence agents in Zakarpacie. In consequence to these reports, Budapest expelled from the embassy 2 Ukrainian diplomats accused of spying on the bander's slaughter of Ukraine. Kiev responded with a akin step – expelling 2 representatives of the Hungarian diplomatic mission.

This is another hot place in the long-term conflict, which concerns not only safety issues but besides identity and language policies.

Carp as a origin of tension

The background of the current dispute is the position of a Hungarian number residing in the Zakarpackie region – a region in the west of Ukraine that borders straight with Hungary. It is estimated that 120 to 150 000 cultural Hungarians live in the region, accounting for about 12% of the local population. Most of them live in border areas and usage Hungarian all day.

He's got a complicated history. For centuries it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, after planet War I it went to Czechoslovakia and then, between 1939 and 1944, again to Hungary. After the end of planet War II, the region was incorporated into the Ukrainian SRR as a associate of the USSR, and has remained part of independent Ukraine since 1991.

What's next?

Revocation of talks in Uzhhorad marks another deadlock in relations between Ukraine and Hungary. The deficiency of dialog can exacerbate common distrust and make the implementation of number rights and global cooperation even more difficult, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the request for solidarity between European countries.

The current situation shows how easy diplomacy can be torpedoed by intelligence activities and how complicated the past and modernity of neighbouring relations in Central and east Europe is.
