That’s enough to add up to 2,425 pounds of extra weight — more than the weight of a compact car. Yet despite that, painting is still an essential part of the aircraft’s design and identity, especially for airlines like Emirates, the biggest A380 operator in the world.

Painting an A380 isn’t as simple as spraying on a few coats. It’s done in a dedicated facility in Hamburg, Germany, after the plane is fully assembled.

For airlines like Emirates, the process involves seven layers of paint applied over the aircraft’s 33,100 square feet of surface area.

The process starts with a primer, followed by a sealing coat. Then, three coats of a custom white paint are added, finished with a clear top coat, and the airline’s logo and tail design.

Each coat is incredibly thin — just 0.0047 inches thick — but together they make up that 2,425-pound addition. The full job takes seven days to complete.

Repainting Takes Even Longer

Airplanes need to be repainted every few years to keep them looking good and protected from the elements.

Emirates, which owns 116 A380s, has its own painting facility in Dubai for this purpose. Repainting is more difficult than the first paint job because the old paint must be stripped off first.

This “strip and repaint” process takes about 15 days and nearly 6,000 hours of labor from a 34-person team.

It’s a big investment, but it’s necessary to maintain the aircraft’s appearance and ensure the paint doesn’t add unnecessary drag or damage over time.
