How do Germans look at AfD? There are so many of them who would like to ban the party

AfD's designation of far right by the Constitution Protection Office has sparked a debate about the possible illegalisation of the party.

After the AfD was classified as a far-right organization by the national Office for Constitution Protection, nearly half of the Germans are in favour of the party's illegalization, as reported by the poll. A survey conducted by the Insa Public Opinion investigation Institute commissioned by ‘Bild am Sonntag’ showed that 48 percent of respondents support this solution, 37 percent are against it, and 15 percent said they did not know.

An ankiet was conducted among 1001 people between 2 May and 3 May 2025 and it follows that the vast majority, 61 percent, considers AfD to be an utmost right party, 31 percent have no opinion and 8 percent do not know.

Opinions on the effects of the ban on organization activities are divided: 35 percent of respondents believe that banning AfD would aid democracy, 39 percent think it would harm democracy, 16 percent anticipate no effects, and 10 percent have no opinions.

The German counter-intelligence after years of control submitted a reassessment of the AfD on Friday and will now classify the full organization as ‘a far right’. The reason for this is "the extremist nature of the organization as a full that violates human dignity". AfD intends to take legal action against this decision.
