Hypocrisy of the state? Mr Kaczmarczyk powerfully on the ban on e-cigarettes for young people

On Wednesday, by a large majority, the Sejm adopted a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. There were 428 Members in favour of the fresh legislation, and there was only 1 against it – Norbert Kaczmarczyk of the Law and Justice. In an interview with Polsat News, the politician explained the reasons for his opposition, calling him "a tiny protest against hypocrisy".

Kaczmarczyk: “The planet needs taxes and should healthy people”

Mr Kaczmarczyk, in his opinion, pointed out the long-term practices of governments in regulating tobacco and alcohol. "For tens of years, Parliament has imposed further taxes and bans on tobacco under the pretext of wellness protection. So why are citizens inactive smoking? If smoking is harmful, why do we prohibit production, hinder it and let import? – he asked rhetorically.

In his opinion, since tobacco and alcohol are harmful, the planet should completely ban their production and sale. – The planet needs taxes, however, and should request healthy people. It was my small protest about this hypocrisy that has been in force for years. As you can see, I was alone in this protest," he added.

New regulations from 1 July – what changes?

The Ministry of wellness project, which will enter into force on 1 July, introduces a complete ban on the sale of e-cigarettes (both with and without nicotine) to people under 18. The fresh law besides extends the ban on the usage of non-nicotin e-cigarettes to all public places where the ban on nicotine already applies.

The prohibition will include:

  • schools and kindergartens,
  • public transport stops,
  • restaurants,
  • Children's playgrounds.

Are e-cigarettes safe?

Although e-cigarettes are frequently advertised as a little harmful alternate to conventional cigarettes, studies indicate their negative wellness effects. They contain nicotine, which powerfully addictive and disrupts the improvement of the tense strategy in adolescents. Inhaled aerosol may contain harmful substances specified as:

  • formaldehyde (carcinogenic),
  • acetone (irritant airways),
  • heavy metals (e.g. lead).

Experts are alerting that e-cigarettes can lead to respiratory irritation, cough, shortness of breath and even increase the hazard of heart and lung disease. There is besides a concern that young e-cigarette users later tend to choice up average cigarettes.

Summary

The vote in the Sejm showed almost unanimous support for the ban on the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. The only voice of opposition was Mr Kaczmarczyk, who felt that the state should consistently approach the fight against drugs – either prohibit them completely or halt profiting from them.

The fresh regulations will come into force on 1 July, tightening up regulations on e-cigarettes and protecting the wellness of young Poles.
