Brain tumors 1 of the most serious challenges in oncology

One of the most serious challenges in oncology are brain tumors, which are usually a shock for patients, as well as for their families – the experts are alerted to the planet Day of Brain Tumors on 8 June.

This day in 2000 was launched by the German Society for the Assistance of Persons with Brain Tumorhilfe (Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe) based in Leipzig to realise how much problems endure from brain tumors and their families. “The brain tumor is not only a patient’s disease, but a full household besides suffers, so talks about treatment are frequently conducted with the patient and with his closest family,” he explained during a gathering with journalists, Dr hab. Tomasz Dziedzic from the Clinic of Neurosurgery and Paediatric Neurosurgery Warsaw Medical University.

Brain tumors are uncommon compared to another cancers, specified as lung, breast or colon cancer. Around 330 000 people detect central tense strategy tumors all year. In the United States, primary brain tumors are diagnosed annually in 84 000 patients, and over 700 000 people live with this disease.

In Poland, primary brain tumors are detected in about 2.5 1000 people all year. According to the National Cancer registry in 2022 (newest data) there were 2,375 cases of primary brain cancers. They were mostly glioblastomas – in 2022 they were detected in 1783 patients.
