Thousands of people made their way from Morocco to Spanish Ceuta, and the local reception centers did not withstand the pressure. The city president Juan Jesús Vivas requested Madrid to recognise the crisis as an emergency situation, a single command centre and strengthening the border. This is further evidence that a state without effective border control loses its ability to defend its own citizens.
Thousands crossed the line
Thousands of migrants crossed the border between Morocco and Spanish Ceuta on Thursday. The Associated Press described the crowds, mostly Moroccan citizens, walking around breakwaters at Tarajal Beach and then moving on the beach and roads. Among the arrivals were young men, but there were besides women and children.
The crisis has been increasing for days. According to data provided by the president of the autonomous town of Juan Jesús Vivas, around 1.5 1000 people reached Ceuta within a week. Authorities spoke of a rate of 300 arriving a day. On Thursday, the scale of events rose and the AP had already informed thousands of people who were on the Spanish side of the border.

The effects were visible even before the Thursday escalation.
