Łukasz Gibala made about 5.4 1000 signatures, but the committee was to consider only about 1.7 1000 valid. It takes 3,000 to register, which is why the candidate must complete the lists by 3 September, by 16 p.m. If he does not, he will not compete on September 27 in the early elections of president Krakow.
The Commission questioned most of the signatures
The Committee of Luke Gibala was under time pressure. By LoveKraków.pl About 5.4 1000 signatures were sent to the Municipal Election Commission, of which about 1.7 1000 were considered correct. This means that there are no about 1.3 1000 valid signatures to the statutory minimum.
Gibala himself reported on 31 August that a crucial part of the entries would be rejected for formal reasons. He explained that the printed card lacked the word “Kraków”. If the supporter failed to add a city name at the address, the signature did not pass the verification. The candidate emphasized that it was not about falsifying the letter or about people outside the Krakow electoral register.
Other accounts besides indicate incorrect PESEL numbers, deficiencies in residence data and repeated entries. The Commission is to issue a temporary refusal to registry and let the Committee to supplement the documents. The deadline for submitting candidates is 3 September at 16 p.m. Each fresh list will besides pass full formal control.
Form mistake hates committee responsibility
Gibala criticises the rules as over-formal and indicates that the PESEL number allows to verify the voters. That argument deserves a post-election conversation. But now the rules are the same for all committees. The candidate seeking management of the second largest city in Poland must guarantee the basic documentation of his own campaign.
Nor should we underestimate the voice of the people who actually supported the candidacy. Rejecting a signature due to the missing city name may look like a triumph of a form over the real will of the voters. The solution, however, is not the discretion of the committee, but the fast completion of the letter, and then a reasonable change of procedures. Election law must be clear and resistant to freedom.
The Committee called on people who are not certain of the correctness of the erstwhile entry to sign the list again. The nearest hours will show the efficiency of Gibala's back office. Race for office after Alexander Miszalski It has been in the atmosphere of political and organisational tension since the beginning.
Kraków needs fair competition
The pre-term election of president Krakow will be held on 27 September. By 14 September, the committee is to announce a list of registered candidates. The Gibala runs for the 4th time. In 2024 he lost in the second circular to Alexander Miszalski, winning 48.96 percent of the vote.
The stakes go beyond 1 policy. The Krakowians have the right to choose from candidates who can gather real support and keep the required procedures. 24 committees have already appeared in the election racebut the number of applications alone will not replace the seriousness, programme and organisational responsibility. Residents should not lose a real alternate by mistake that the committee could have avoided.
If Gibala collects the missing signatures, the residents at the urns will decide. If he doesn't make it, he'll be out before the right fight starts. For a candidate who wants to take work for Kraków, it is simply a brutal but clear test of effectiveness.
