In fresh years Poland has become an arena of dangerous invasion, which can revolutionize native ecosystems. This new, inconspicuous but highly dangerous species is simply a Spanish snail (Arion vulgaris), which appeared on Polish soils as an effect of expansion, which has lasted since the 1950s, which crossed the borders of Europe and even reached North America. Despite its innocent name, the Spanish snail is simply a real nightmare for gardeners, farmers and local fauna that cannot ignore this threat.

Risk from Spanish snails

The Spanish snail, besides called the lusitan snail, can form large populations that pose a serious threat to agricultural and horticultural crops. The life cycle of this species covers the yearly period – adults appear in summertime and die before winter comes, but during that time they have a chance to lay a large number of eggs from which successive generations of these voracious creatures will hatch.

However, it is not only plants that are targeted by these molluscs. The Spanish snail can hunt tiny invertebrates and even bird chicks, which poses a serious threat to biodiversity in the areas it colonizes.

Beginning of the invasion

Despite its name, the Spanish snail does not come from Spain. Originally misidentified as Arion lusitanicus, he was first spotted as an invasive species in France in 1956. Later, however, studies have shown that the actual Arion lusitanicus is another species found on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The Spanish snail, although very morphologically similar, differs from the anatomy of certain interior organs and the number of chromosomes.

How can you identify and do what?

Spanish snail can scope awesome sizes – up to 15 cm long. His body is usually brown or red, sometimes with darker stripes. A characteristic feature is the bright sole of the foot, visible during movement.

If you announcement the presence of these snails in your surroundings, do not stay indifferent. Combating invasions is best started by hand collecting and destroying individuals and their eggs. Avoid besides moving snails and dirt from places where they happen to avoid further spreading this species.

In the fight for our environment

The Spanish snail is only 1 of many invasive species to be faced with. In a time of globalisation, climate change and human activities, more and more alien organisms are entering fresh areas, which can lead to disastrous effects on local ecosystems.

That is why it is so crucial for us to be aware of the risks and to respond accordingly. Only through education and active action can we halt the invasion of Spanish snails and another dangerous species.
