Why now?
When asked by a TVN24 writer about why NIK is again carrying out an audit at the IPN, Marian Banaś explained that it was re-taken at the request of controllers conducting erstwhile activities. This proposal was approved by the college, the parliamentary committee and came in last June before Karol Nawrocki considered running. In addition, already at the beginning of the interview, he referred to the proposition that NIK's actions might be related to politics during the presidential campaign.
Of course there will be different comments here for the interests of 1 organization or another – he said. – But we have nothing to do with any party. We're making scheduled checks. And this control is simply a planned 1 that we're doing right now. This is simply a comprehensive, comprehensive [control-ed.], concerning the financial and property economy of IPN for the erstwhile 3 years.
Marian Banaś stressed that the disclosure of the audit results in an institution headed by a presidential candidate during the run is irrelevant as NIK implements the planned actions according to the timetable.
Reasons for control
According to Banasia, the reintroduction of the IPN is mainly due to the advanced investment and assets of the institution. NIK wants to analyse the procedures and check the compliance of the projects implemented, including the Public Procurement Act, and measure the cost-effectiveness of the expenditure.
The erstwhile check revealed, among another things, that the IPN allocated 370.000 PLN to multimedia capsules to the Central halt of History. NIK intends to check whether they were actually delivered, as irregularities were previously found. It was found that the invoice had been issued, even though the equipment was not in the premises of the institution. Banaś emphasized that this is only 1 of the issues that request clarification, and control concerns much larger amounts, reaching hundreds of millions of PLN.
Speaking of detected irregularities, Banaś wrote:
We've made 4 calls to the D.A.'s office. 2 notices were made by the prosecutor's office, 1 was dropped, but in December we filed a complaint with the court, and 1 is inactive unexamined.
Banyan wants to run for election?
On TVN24, the erstwhile PiS minister was besides asked if he intended to run for president.
For today, I'm the CEO of NIK, and next day we'll see, time will tell. He answered.
Marian Banaś stated that citizens were looking for a candidate not related to any political organization and felt that he himself met these criteria. There is simply a website online to advance its possible start in presidential elections, the authors of which claim to meet with it and encourage candidateing. However, the president of NIK stressed that there was no connection to this initiative.
The word of office of president of the NIK will end on August 30, 2025. Marian Banaś has the chance to apply for re-election, but the decision in this case depends on the majority of parliament. He was appointed to this position during the PiS regulation as a candidate supported by Jarosław Kaczyński's party.
