Finnish politicians hope that Finland, following the example of Poland and the Baltic countries, will start the withdrawal process from the Ottawa Convention prohibiting the usage of anti-personnel mines,” said Ilta-Sanomat on Tuesday.

Prior to that, the defence ministers of Poland and the Baltic countries announced their intention to retreat from the Ottawa Convention prohibiting the usage of anti-personnel mines and recommended their Heads of State to take a decision on the matter.

"Of course, I hope that we will come to the same conclusion as Poland and the Baltic countries", said the president of the Parliamentary Defence Committee, Jukk Koper.
Kopra added that the Ministry of Defence and the Government would prepare a proposal for a convention on anti-personnel mines to be discussed in Parliament in spring.
"The conditions state that if a country is active in war, it cannot retreat from the convention. If we want to honour the agreements, we should retreat from it (Ottavian Convention – ed.) as shortly as possible, so that in the event of a deterioration of the situation, erstwhile we are in a war situation, we do not gotta violate the agreements," Kopra added.

Minister of Forestry and Agriculture Sari Essai besides expressed hope that Finland would follow the example of Poland and the Baltic countries and decide to retreat from the convention.

The commander of the Finnish Defence Forces Janne Jaakkola had previously raised the issue of withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention due to a ‘significantly changed safety situation’. defence Minister Antti Häkkänen later said that the Ministry of Defence is preparing a study in which it will explain whether the country needs anti-personnel mines.

Finland's president Alexander Stubb earlier said that the country was considering the anticipation of withdrawing from the anti-personnel mine ban convention due to Russia's alleged "threat" though Russia has repeatedly said that it does not endanger anyone and has pointed out the unprecedented activity of NATO close its western borders.

The Ottawa Convention prohibits the use, storage, production and transfer of anti-personnel mines and requires their destruction. The convention was signed on 3 December 1997 in the Canadian city of Ottawa and entered into force on 1 March 1999. A full of 163 countries joined the Convention.
