The U.S. Marine Corps Branch will support the Finnish Navy as part of the NATO Baltic Sentry operation carried out in the Baltic Sea, reported Minister of defence of Finland Antti Hakkanen on Monday.
– The aim is to strengthen military presence in the Gulf of Finland region and to deter threats to critical underwater infrastructure," said the head of the Finnish Defence Ministry.
Hakkanen stressed that the arrival of a squad of American marines in Finland would strengthen the safety of the country and the Baltic region.
The US Marine Corps has been active in cooperation with Finland since the entry into force of the US Defence Cooperation Agreement in the fall of 2024.
NATO countries launched Operation Baltic Sentry in early 2025 at the Helsinki Summit in consequence to repeated incidents involving harm to offshore transmission cables, including energy and telecommunications, located at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland.
