Exhumations of Poles in Puźniki. fresh facts came to light

In the Tarnopolski region in the west of Ukraine Puźniki was conducted exhumation of victims of the Volyn massacre. It was in this tiny town on the night of 12 to 13 February 1945 that Ukrainian nationalists murdered – according to various sources – 50 to 120 Poles.

Exhumation works, which the Ukrainian side agreed to, are coordinated by experts from the Freedom and Democracy Foundation. These include researchers from the Pomeranian Medical University and the Institute of National Memory.

As RMF FM found out, so far, 42 remains have been extracted during the exhumation. Apart from fragments of skeletons during work in the erstwhile village of Puźniki, researchers besides secured individual items most likely belonging to the victims. Among them were buttons, rosary fragments, medals.

The remains found by experts were to be deposited in a peculiar location, but details have not yet been disclosed. They are known to belong to civilians, and among the victims were women and children. In the close future, comparative studies are to be conducted in Szczecin to establish the identity of those buried in the collective grave.

Exhumations in the Cannons. There will be a fresh proposal

Even before the beginning of the work, it was suspected that in Puźniki Ukrainians could execution up to 120 Poles. According to the findings of RMF FM, researchers found that there is simply a second gap in Puźniki where Poles lie. Therefore, The Freedom and Democracy Foundation is to submit papers to the Ukrainian authorities on this matter.

It is to be prepared by the end of May. According to the regulations, a fresh licence is needed to begin further searches – even if it were conducted in a place that would be neighbouring the bottom that is being examined.
