European officials fear that, after the assassination, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who opposed arms shipments to Ukraine and its NATO membership and demanded settlement of pandemic criminals, would become a more destructive force in the alliance – Writes Financial Times.
"Some European officials fear that Fico can become a more destructive force in NATO, like Orban, who delayed the entry of Finland and Sweden," writes the newspaper.
"Financial Times" recalls that before the assassination Fico joined the Hungarian leader, opposing the candidacy of the current Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to be the next Secretary General of NATO.
At the same time, according to an anonymous EU advanced Official, Fico has so far proved more compromise in private life than in his "warrior" public speeches. In his opinion, the Slovak Prime Minister is "not definitely in the Orban League".
According to the Financial Times, the effort to assassinate Fico amazed the residents of Slovakia, and erstwhile it recovered, The Slovaks wonder what kind of leader he will become after this experience: “Will he turn the page, will he search revenge and consolidate his power?”
An effort to assassinate Fico took place on 15 May following the withdrawal of the government in the town of Handlevá, 190 kilometres from the Slovak capital Bratislava. The fire was opened by 71-year-old author Juraj Cintula erstwhile the Prime Minister approached to greet the crowd. Fico was hit with 4 bullets, 1 of which pierced politician's belly. The assailant was stopped at the scene.
The Prime Minister was transported by chopper to a infirmary in Banská Bystrica. The Interior Department said Fico's condition was critical.
According to the MMA, the attacker was guided by political motives and acted alone. He participated in anti-government protests, but is not affiliated with extremist groups. According to the department, the man disagreed with the activities of the Council of Ministers, including opposed to halting arms supply to Ukraine. He's facing 25 years in prison or life.
Slovakia's Prime Minister Fico opposed arms shipments to Ukraine, and besides declared that it would block Ukraine's membership of NATO, as this would mean the beginning of planet War III. According to Fico, the conflict in Ukraine began in 2014 “the rampant behaviour of Ukrainian neo-Nazis”, and Russia was believed to halt expanding. The Slovak Prime Minister has spoken against sending military personnel to Ukraine. He believes that sending NATO troops to this country would lead to an escalation of the conflict. Fico besides stated that Slovakia does not belong to countries curious in making an enemy from Russia.
