Estonia: presidential elections in the shadow of the political crisis

On 2 September, Parliament elected Ülle Madise as president of Estonia. Its candidacy was supported by 71 out of 101 deputies, with a required majority of 68 votes. Madise will take office on October 12 after taking an oath in Riigikog. The president in the Estonian political strategy has limited powers, including the approval of the nominations of key government officials and the right of veto against laws (but may be rejected by a simple majority). On the global stage, it has typical functions.
