Greens wipe their hands

If von der Leyen is not elected for a second term, Greens can be given the Commissioner's influential position, which will considerably increase their importance in Brussels. The political failure is possible due to the likelihood of a more hostile attitude of the European Parliament after the elections of 6-9 June,

The Greens are most likely to accomplish this position through a coalition agreement between the ruling German parties: the SPD, the Greens and the FDP. According to this agreement, the Greens can nominate a candidate for another highest position if the president of the European Commission does not come from Germany.

Potential candidates

According to information from German government officials and MEPs, the short list includes Franziska Brantner and Sven Giegold, who are state secretaries in the German Ministry of Economy, led by Robert Habeck, the leader of the Greens and Vice Chancellor of Germany.

Franziska Brantner, liable for EU and trade policy in the Ministry of the Economy, is considered to be the main candidate for the post of Commissioner. Sven Giegold, a close associate of Habeck, focuses on SME policy.

Green leaders will make the final decision about a candidate for a possible nomination. These, on the another hand, aim at the European Commission's positions on the supervision of the EU budget, energy policy and abroad affairs. The candidate of the current German abroad Minister Annalena Baerbock and Green leader Robert Habeck is unlikely. besides Terry Reintke, the Greens' lead candidate in the European elections, is not considered.

Not for an alliance with Meloni.

A fewer days ago, the media reported that the Greens had respected Ursula von der Leyen, that the alliance with Meloni's organization would consequence in their withdrawal of their support for the current head of the European Commission. As they pointed out, they do not intend to enter into a coalition with the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists (EKR), which means that von der Leyen or anyone else wishing to form a majority in the fresh European Parliament must make a choice.

Von der Leyen mentioned the willingness to cooperate with Meloni during pre-election debates in Maastricht (30 April) and in the European Parliament (23 May). As she pointed out, the European People's organization is open to cooperation with all MEPs gathering the 3 criteria: pro-Ukrainian attitude, pro-European attitude and compliance with the regulation of law. She excluded cooperation with parties specified as the French National Front, the German AfD and the Polish Confederation.
