After the exhumation works in Puźniki in Tarnopol, where remains of at least 42 people were discovered, another phase of Polish-Ukrainian cooperation may take place in Poland. Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland, Vasil Bodnar, confirmed that preparations for fresh searches are underway.
Completion of work in Cannoneers and further steps
The Ukrainian-Polish working group has already completed the exhumation work in Puźniki. DNA analysis is presently underway, and remains will be buried in the local cemetery to make a dignified memorial for the families of the victims.
– "It is very crucial to show the societies of both countries that we not only carried out exhumations, but besides hid and placed crosses on graves" Bodnar stressed.
Further stages of cooperation – Poland on the target
The Ambassador informed that at the gathering of Ukrainian and Polish cultural ministers, further permits for exploration were discussed.
– “We want the next phase of joint work to take place in 1 of the places in Poland” – announced Bodnar.
A Long Way to Agreement
Negotiations between Ukraine and Poland on exhumation have been ongoing since 2023. The breakthrough was the abolition of the 2017 moratorium which blocked the search for Polish victims in Ukraine.
On 8 January 2025, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture agreed to an exhumation in Puźniki. DNA investigation will be conducted in Poland with the participation of Ukrainian scientists.
