The Democratic politician of California, Gavin Newsom, signed a bill that forbids local authorities from demanding that voters present an identity card at the polling station before giving a vote. The fresh regulations will enter into force on 1 January 2025. Thus California will become 1 of the 14 states that do not require proof of identity at the vote.
The bill that Newsom signed on 1 October aims to prevent the actions of certain cities, specified as Huntington Beach, where the authorities passed local regulations requiring the election commissions to verify the election powers. The bill won in March in the election with support of 53.4%.
State law infringement provisions
Even before passing and signing the California lawyer General's Act, Rob Bonta, and California Secretary of State, Shirley Weber, filed a suit against Huntington Beach, arguing that local laws violate state law.
The right to vote freely is the basis of our democracy, and Huntington Beach's policy on the recognition of voters runs counter to this principle – said Bonta in a message from the beginning of this year.
He claimed that the state elections already included sOlly requirements for the recognition of voters with strong safeguards to prevent electoral fraud". He said that the fresh requirements would disproportionately burden “low income voters, colored voters, young or older voters, and people with disabilities.
